FIELD HOCKEY

This was a rebuilding year for the 1992
Fk*y Hockey team with three return¬
ing varsity players and two new
coaches. The team was captained by
Amy Jennings, Kriss Rapoza, and An¬
drea Welman. There were only five
seniors on the team: Rapoza, Welman,
Michelle Fogg, Julie Salamon, and Sue
Turner. Our new coaches were Liz Di-
biasio and assistant coach Wendy
Castonguay. Although the team ended
up with a record of 2-12-2, we had
several outstanding players such as
sophomore goalies Lori Sousa and
freshmen Shellie Silvia and Leslie Ar-
ruda. There were many other promis¬
ing players and the seniors wish every -
one luck in the coming season.

VOLLEYBALL

Somerset High School's Girls volleyball team had an outstanding
1992 season. Led by tri-captains Kerri Cote, Brenda Modzelewski,
and Lizz Silva, the small but mighty team of ten ended up in second
place standing in the Eastern Athletic Conference, trailing behind
their undefeated rival, Dartmouth. Second place advanced these
motivated girls to the Tournament quarter finals where they faced
New Bedford, the team which was seated number one in Division I.
This was a little bit intimidating for the girls, but they went to New
Bedford with positive attitudes, and played to the best of their
ability. Even though this game was ultimately a loss, the team was
happy and proud of their overall accomplishments.

Throughout the season, there was an equal effort on the part of
every member of the team. Katie Arruda, after returning from a
missed season, dominated the passing and digging scene, along with
outstanding tri-captain Brenda Modzelewski, who also performed
exceptionally at the net. Other outstanding hitters included tri-
captains Lizz Silva and Kerri Cote, along with juniors Beth Carvalho
and Tracie Goulart. Junior Tracey Taveria and Kerri Cote were the
team’s main setting force. Senior/starter Joan O’Neil sophomore
Sara Ponte were two versatile players who could play virtually any
position. Senior Melissa Nasiff, who was out for some time because
of a knee injury, came back in the last half of the season and greatly
helped the team by demonstrating some invaluable serving skills.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this 1992 volleyball season
a great and memorable one.

CROSS-COUNTRY

fol **«**®4«S

This year marked the 28th season of cross-country at Som¬
erset High School. Once again, the team was coached by the
legendary Coach Bernardo. It is a season that will always be
remembered as a great one. Senior runners included: tri -
captains Karen Considine, Rachel Dill, and Ron Golas¬
zewski. Also, Foo Kwan, Amie Baldwin, Danielle Souza,
and Fric Worsley.

The girls worked very hard and had a strong season. The
girls team had a 3-3 record in the league, and placed fourth
in the F.AC Conference Meet. Jen Paquin, Danielle Souza,
and Karen Considine led the girls throughout the season.

The boys team also fared well, finishing third at the Confer¬
ence Meet with a 4-2 record. They were led by senior Fric
'Star' Worsley . The boys have a strong team returning next
year. The boys CC team was the only Somerset team to beat
both Durfee and Case this year. The boys also beat the
green team Dartmouth, for the first time in many years.

Memorable meets included Durfee, Dartmouth and Stang.
The season consisted of many pizza parties, P.R.’s, and
many original nicknames.

The season ended with fourteen team members participat¬
ing in the Kinney Championships Meet in the Bronx, New
York City. It was an exciting trip that included a Malcolm X
rally, a hospital visit, and van problems. It Was an experience
and a season we will never forget.

Soccer

The Somerset Soccer team experienced a
difficult year in which the Raiders finished
with an overall record of 5-10-3 and a league
record of 4-6-2. This team had to overcome
injuries to several key players in order to win
as many games as it did. This year’s co¬
captains were John Donnelly and Tom Mul-
laly. Donnelly was the heart of the Raider
defense and was named to the Eastern Ath¬
letic Conference All-Star team. Mullaly was
a four year starter, the first in school history.
He was also a E.A.C. All-Star. Other seniors
that were big contributors were Lori Bo-
telho, Mike DoCuto, Gary Evans, Keith
Fairhurst, Matt King, Derek King, Pat Leo¬
nardo, Dan Norman, and Glenn Silva. The
highlights of this season included a 5-0 de¬
feat of Bishop Stang and a scoreless tie
against Attleboro.

FOOTBALL

Under the leadership of tri-cap¬
tains Tim McGee, Jeff Sperling
and Kevin Smith, the 1992 Blue
Raider football 0 team remained
strong and never quit. With several
key players injured early in the sea¬
son, the Raiders had to rely on
many inexperienced players to step
in and get the job done. These
young players along with a tough
group of seniors and juniors
showed how they could work to¬
gether in impressive victories over
conference rivals Stang and Fee-
han. Although the overall record
was not impressive, the team dis¬
played a lot of pride especially in
fighting to the final whistle on
Thanksgiving.

A National Squad

It all started back in May when the football squad was chosen. These twenty girls attended the ICF summer
camp and received a bid to the International Open Cheering Championship held in Nashville, TN. The girls
knew there was a long road ahead, but they were willing to take that challenge. Their dedication and super spirit
kept these girls striving for their goal. Placing third in the state championship after being raised a whole division
was a great accomplishment, but that was only the beginning. After an exhausting 18 hour bus trip, we finally ar¬
rived in Nashville where would compete for a national title. Practice time and preliminaries went really well and
we made our name known. We reached our goal by making the "top 25" and advanced into the finals with
determination and confidence. Our performance at the finals went better than what we ever expected. The night
of the finals, it was announced the we placed 9th.
